Oyea
Set on a steep, 100-wah² (approx. 400 sqm) sloped plot beneath a large wild olive tree, this compact one-bedroom retreat follows the traditional high-altitude engineering of Lua and mountain communities. By positioning the structure parallel to site contours without level grading, the design reduces structural costs, preserves natural drainage, and avoids high-wind exposure. The roof combines sub-layered corrugated panels with traditional Tong Tueng (dipterocarp) leaves, acting as a shock-absorbing shield against heavy falling olives in April while eliminating roof glare. Excavated soil from a flat parking area was repurposed to create a stargazing deck held by contour-driven bamboo retaining walls built by Lisu craftsmen, complete with a traditional bamboo shelter (pham).
